Breaking Barriers, Building Resilient Pastoral Communities in Uganda
RIWE_AFRICA is an Indigenous Non-profit making Organization dedicated to improving the well-being and resilience of pastoralists and agro-pastoralist women, youth, and Children in Uganda. We work with pastoralist communities across Uganda’s cattle corridor to address Poverty, Health, and educational challenges affecting vulnerable women, youth, and children.
Poverty remains one of the major Challenges facing pastoralist communities. Limited economic opportunities and unstable livestock markets leave many Pastoral and agro-pastoral families struggling to meet basic needs. This often forces women and youth into cycles of vulnerability, limiting their access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods.
Rangelands predominantly occupied by Pastoralists are on the frontline of climate change. Increasing droughts, floods, and unpredictable weather patterns threaten livestock, affect water sources, and compromise food security. These climate shocks weaken livelihoods and deepen the vulnerability of women, youth, and children who depend heavily on natural resources for survival.
Pastoralist women and youth continue to face systemic inequalities that limit their access to land and property ownership, decision-making spaces, education, and economic opportunities. Social and structural barriers continue to silence their voices and restrict their ability to fully participate in shaping the future of their communities.
Healthy Communities are the foundation of resilient Societies!
At RIWE_AFRICA, we work to improve access to quality healthcare services for pastoralist women, youth, and children. Our health programs focus on maternal and newborn health, HIV prevention and care, mental health, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) to ensure communities can live healthier and more dignified lives. “When she is educated, she is empowered, and the future is secured”.
Education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of Poverty and shape a brighter future for children and youth. RIWE_AFRICA works to expand access to affordable and quality education for pastoralist children and youth, especially the Girl child, while promoting safe learning environments and opportunities that enable young people to reach their full potential and contribute to the development of their communities. Economic resilience empowers communities to build secure and sustainable futures.
We support pastoralist women and youth in strengthening their livelihoods and improving food security. Our approach focuses on building practical skills to improve productivity and quality, strengthening market linkages to promote sustainable incomes, and advancing financial inclusion to help women and youth entrepreneurs grow and expand their business enterprises. We also strengthen community systems that help families withstand economic and climate-related shocks. Learn more about economic empowerment projects.

For many adolescent girls in Uganda’s pastoralist communities, the cost of growing up is far too high. Adolescence often brings early marriage, dropping out of school, teenage pregnancy, and limited access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information. These issues undermine girls’ dignity, health, and future opportunities.
At RIWE_AFRICA, we believe that youth and women are not just beneficiaries of development but powerful agents of change. Our Livelihood Program is designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and resources to build sustainable income sources, improve household well-being, and lead transformative change within their communities.
Climate change continues to threaten pastoralist communities in Uganda with prolonged droughts, floods, and livestock diseases. For families already struggling with poverty, these shocks bring hunger, conflict, and loss of livelihoods. At RIWE_AFRICA, we believe the solutions must come from the communities themselves.
On 27 December 2025, RIWE_AFRICA, in partnership with Rwebisengo Cultural Association and other community women groups, officially launched a community-led campaign to protect women’s land and Property rights in Uganda’s cattle corridor, marking an important milestone in the fight against land dispossession and gender-based injustice affecting pastoralist women and widows.
RIWE AFRICA is currently making a lasting impact in 6 pastoral Districts across Uganda.
